THIS BLOG IS NOW AN ORPHAN SINCE NOBODY CAN REACH IT ANY MORE: http://full-ngage-games.blogspot.com I initially started off trying to find out WHAT I needed to stop blocking to make it through to them. Here are the things that started to show up in what is in most people's block lists: # in my header partner.googleadservices.com www.google-analytics.com # in main body ad.realist.gen.tr ad.trafficmp.com ad.yieldmanager.com googleads.g.doubleclick.net leadback.advertising.com linkbucks.com www.linkbucks.com map.media6degrees.com pagead2.googlesyndication.com www.realist.gen.tr I do not block these hosts but you cannot block them either: feeds.feedburner.com images.linkwithin.com reali.st www.stumbleupon.com www.whosayin.com widget.linkwithin.com widget2.linkwithin.com widget3.linkwithin.com widget5.linkwithin.com xslt.alexa.com xsltcache.alexa.com There are quite a few other content hosts but only an idiot would block them. In case you are wondering I have saw some idiots in the the past blocking the Verisign and Thawte SSL cert checking hosts. I finally gave up my full hosts file and reduced it to just my necessary entries in the hosts file and my add.Risk hosts (which means I am no longer blocking any ad servers or trackers) AND I STILL DIDN'T MAKE IT IN! I ran it with WireShark and although there are other hosts, NOBODY would block them. I finally reduced the hosts in the hosts file only to the ones necessary for the system (nothing blocked in the hosts file any more) and I still did not make it in! I am not blocking anything any more! Goodnight sweet prince! Here are the results of the tests: ABP Enabled PAC Enabled Hosts Blocked Access =========== =========== ============= ====== YES YES YES Denied YES YES NO Denied YES NO YES Denied YES NO NO Denied NO YES YES Denied NO YES NO Denied NO NO YES Denied NO NO NO DENIED I strongly suspect the guy started with something like what tv.com has. The only solution I found that worked with tv.com was: ABP Enabled PAC Enabled Hosts Blocked Access =========== =========== ============= ====== YES NO NO Allowed You have to allow tv.com, cbs.com, and who knows how many others access to ad.doubleclick.net. I could have done that with lots of white list rules but the PAC filter has the blocking of ads fourth in priority and although blocking malware is only third the magnitute of activity in blocking malware on my part is significantly more than blocking ads. The solution for me was to just boycott but for others turn off the PAC filter and do not block ad.doubleclick.net in the hosts file. The ABP people don't have the additional burden of blocking malware and they have a richer set of white-listing options so they can handle the situation. Normally most web-site have a simple one-line JavaScript that just checks if ABP is plugged into Firefox and if it is activated. In the future they will probably add another one for Chrome's AdBlock. But tv.com and less than ten other hosts I have found so far have some very sophisticated JavaScript that also detects our PAC filter and a blocking hosts file entry. I suggest in the future that only people that can write code as well as they do ever attempt to do it that way and that it probably isn't worth it. The simple one line JavaScript codes to check if ABP is installed and turned on in either Firefox or Chrome or if AdBlock is installed and turned on in Chrome are good enough to block the access to the web-site until people turn the ad blockers off. For those smart people who use a blocking hosts file, let them. So you are letting less than 1% of the people get away with not seeing your ads. Whoop-te-do! Was it really worth all of that effort? Was it worth the effort for a hosts file and PAC filter that have blocking of malware at a much higher level of priority than blocking ads? full-ngage-games.blogspot.com must have originally had some JavaScript code that was equally tricky but it must have got away from them. I finally completely blew away my following folders: ~/.mozilla ~/.config/google-chrome And then created new tabla-rasa configurations that never had ABP or AdBlock. When I say blow away you need to understand I always have fail-safe backups of my browser configuration folders so I can put things back the way they were originally. Windows Instructions: ===================== You can do much the same thing on Windows with Firefox by making sure it doesn't have a fast start and that Firefox isn't running. You do it like this (using XP terminology): Go here in My Computer or Windows Explorer %UserProfile%\Application Data\ Rename the "Mozilla" folder "OldMozilla" When you start Firefox again it will create a new folder. But all of your add-ons including ABP will be gone. You will be able to see you cannot visit this blog. When you are satisfied, close Firefox and delete the newly created Mozilla folder. Then rename OldMozilla back to be Mozilla. That will put things back just the way you had them. In case you are wondering, YES, I BACK UP THIS FOLDER. If something fouls up the Firefox configs, I just close Firefox, blow this folder away and restore the folder at the last fail-safe backup, update ABP and all other plug-ins and then create a new fail safe backup. I do NOT go anywhere during this process and my home page is a JPG file on my machine. ========================= End Windows Instructions: Then I went and tried it again with no hosts being blocked in the hosts file, no ABP plugged into FireFox or AdBlock plugged into Chrome because I had brand new browser configuration data. What happened? PERMISSION WAS DENIED IN BOTH CHROME AND FIREFOX WITH NOTHING BEING BLOCKED! The owner of the http://full-ngage-games.blogspot.com blog has a runaway freight train and if the only way in was through the blog itself there would be no way to correct the problem! If you get access denied with nothing blocked how would you be able to get in and edit your pages if the only way in was through the blog itself (what I normally use to go in)? 2011-05-11 ADDENDUM: I tried it with Opera with the same clean default configuration. Sayonara. It doesn't work there either on Linux. The folder for that is: ~/.opera To run the tests all you have to do is this in a terminal being sure to close Opera and wait a few seconds: $ cd ; zip -r9 opera.zip ./.opera $ rm -fr .opera # Start the Opera browser and test the blog. Once you are # satisfied that it doesn't work close the Opera browser # and then type: $ rm -fr .opera $ unzip opera.zip Actually, I have fail-safe backups of all the browsers I use in testing potentially bad hosts. If they find a month zero flaw in the browser or sneak some JavaScript code into it I just blow it away and go back to the latest fail safe backup. This also could bail you out if you had added the new Ant Tool-Bar that I now block (2011-05-28). Firefox no longer has that add-on available. That doesn't help the ten million people who have downloaded it. Not only that, but it makes TOR or the Internet Proxies useless. Moral: Don't be the first on the block to add that great new add-on to Firefox, Chrome, Opera, or what ever browser it is that you use. My PAC filter and hosts file have been there for years! If it is good it will stay the course. Actually I won't be doing this much longer and right now I put less than half the effort into it that I used to. WE HAVE AN ORPHAN! ABP filter list providers, you may as well remove full-ngage-games.blogspot.com from these exclusion rules now since all it is doing now is taking up space and you still cannot get into the blog. EasyList: ========= @@||pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/expansion_embed.js$ @@||pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/show_ads.js$ @@||pagead2.googlesyndication.com^*/show_ads_impl.js$ FanBoy AdBlock: =============== @@||pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/ads? @@||pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/expansion_embed.js$ @@||pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/js/*/show_ads_impl.js$ @@||pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/show_ads.js$ Even with ZERO filtration you still get that turn off message at this blog! You may want to exclude it again but I can NOT swear I have all of the hosts the blog owner uses or that they will not add more in the future. Do you want to clutter up your filters with at least a dozen or more exclusions? I am blocking them! Tell them to stop making money with web hosting provided for free by Google or if they do have to pay for their pages move their stuff to their own web-site. Consider this an object lesson in what NOT to do in insisting on people allowing your trackers and ad pushers. In this case we have a blog that nobody will be able to visit ever again if the owner dies. I wonder if they checked to see if Firefox can go there without ABP installed and no hosts blocked in the hosts file? If it won't work that way it certainly won't work with just ABP installed but turned off. I don't see a way to turn off AdBlock in Chrome, YET. That was what they were intimating you had to do to see their blog. BUT I CANNOT GET IN WITH A BROWSER IN THE RAW USER CONFIG STATE AND NOTHING BLOCKED IN THE HOSTS FILE. Fortunately, they CAN login via www.blogspot.com and make the changes. If you couldn't it would be like those idiots making OpenPGP keys with no expiration date, putting them up on the key servers, not creating a revoke, forgetting the pass-phrase and then the OpenPGP key really IS an orphan forever! You can NOT delete the key from the key servers because that violates the trust relationship. Hopefully this person stops using Google's free service and makes sure turning off ABP in Firefox or AdBlock in Chrome is all you need to make it in. What do the default blogs with nothing added over what Google provides look like? http://NoMoreDST.BlogSpot.com http://SecureMecca.BlogSpot.com From time to time ABP or AdBLock in Chrome may show csi.gstatic.com but it is blogspot.com doing it, not me. Most of the time the blogs don't show a thing, but my hosts file MAY block www.google-analytics.com. I made sure I went the OPPOSITE DIRECTION from this joker. He needs revenue for some page hosting provided for free (to him) by Google? Hmm, isn't this a violation of their TOS? It is too bad I cannot report it. You have to get in to report it! I cannot get in, PERIOD! Like, I said in the hosts file but even stronger here, this is a monument to stupidity! Henry Hertz Hobbit hhhobbit GNAT securemecca.com
